May 2043: Races Tighten

The Architects fall back to the pack, following their 22-3 April with a 10-18 May. The order of the American standings does not change this month, but things tighten up considerably. Milwaukee does the most to improve their position, going 16-10 and moving to within two games of the Wild Card. The league awards Batter of the Month to Detroit’s Jon Harrison and Pitcher of the Month to Traverse City’s Scott Banda. Gray Dijkstra repeats as Rookie of the Month.

April 2043: Chicago Wins First 13

Defending champion Chicago begin the new season with 13 straight wins. Duluth loses 14 straight, Detroit wins 8 straight, and Windsor loses 8 straight. Thunder Bay signs some big names and seizes first place in Canada. Pitching dominates, with league ERAs around 3.00.

Chicago’s Harrison McGill (.333, 6 HR, 14 RBI) and Toronto’s John McIlymoyle (.325, 5 HR, 18 RBI) win Batter of the Month. Chicago closer Emmet Dodman (5-0, 7 SV, 2.75 ERA) and Hamilton’s Ernie Henderson (6-0, 0.54 ERA) win Pitcher of the Month. Henderson begins the season by pitching 32 scoreless innings. Kingston’s Greg Patterson (3-1, 2.59 ERA) and Toledo’s Gray Dijkstra (.240, 1 HR) win Rookie of the Month.

Extra Innings…and Then Some!

Toronto tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the seventh. With runners on second and third, Jesse Stannard singled to left. The runner on third scored, tying the game, while the runner on second tried for home… but was thrown out. After that, there were some singles and walks, but a runner didn’t reach scoring position until the 10th (when Toronto’s Michael Howard got stranded at third) and then the 18th (when Windsor’s Harry O’Connell hit a lead-off doubled but was stranded at third). Runners reached second in the 20th (single and sac bunt) and 21st innings (walk and ground out that advanced the runner). In the top of the 26th, Windsor’s Christophe Sarrazin doubled with two outs and got stranded. In the bottom of that inning, Michael Howard led off with a triple and was driven in by Jesse Stannard to win the game.
