2018 Inter-league Schedule Vote

Post by commish » Tue Sep 20, 2016 1:56 pm

Discussion Thread: http://greatlakesootp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=55

1. Season length remains 140
2. Inter-league play
A. 110 games vs. teams in your league (22x5)
B. 30 games vs. teams in the other league (5x6)

Vote Yes to Approve
Vote No to Keep the Schedule the same

Note: Since this is a league that will not change major rules without strong support we will need 9 Yes votes for it to change this season.

With reservations, I vote Yes. I don't like the uneven number of home/road games vs out-of-league opponents, nor has anybody made a convincing argument why 140 games should be non-negotiable. But 28 games vs in-league opponents was too many, so this is a step in the right direction.

No. I would like interleague play, but I do not like the uneven number of home/road games vs opponents in the other league. Besides offending my sense of order, it just strikes me as entirely unrealistic. (Why should my Toronto Maples only get two home games with the World Championship Milwaukee Eagles while Kingston gets them for three? Fans want to see the champs. That's gate revenue you're costing me!)

Voting yes but basically, I agree with Al and Martin. The uneven schedule bugs me. In my estimation, better to go to 146 games and have everything be equal.

I find it interesting that all of the no voters - with the exception of Martin - offer no explanation as to why they dislike playing more teams in a more representative schedule. Steve has asked for input from the GMs, as well as a vote.

Also, I don't think requiring 75 percent of teams to vote yes to pass this is legit. Two-thirds seems sufficient to me...one more vote than a simple majority. Anyway, we will have to wait 'til next year, I reckon.

I don't like it either, but it actually isn't unrealistic. It is, in fact, exactly what happens in real life. Since 2013 (when the Astros moved to the American League), all MLB teams play 19 games against all their division opponents, 6 OR 7 games against their intra-league, extra-division opponents and 3 OR 4 games against whatever inter-league opponents they take on. So there's home/road inequities all over the place, although I suppose they feel it all evens out in the end. All teams still, of course, play 81 games at home and 81 on the road.

I can only guess whether the other "no" voters might have voted yes if the proposal had been proposed differently, but knowing at least one person who is actually for interleague play voted no because he didn't like the way the change was going to be implemented raises the question: could we have more discussion on this so that we could come up with an interleague play proposal that all the proponents of interleague play actually like?
