The Duluth Sea Gulls beat the Detroit Thunderbirds, 5-2, at Sea Gulls Field. The Sea Gulls got a fine performance from center fielder George Goff, who was 4-4 with 3 doubles and was hit by a pitch, while scoring 2 times. Bill Lutz got the win, improving to 1-2. He worked 6.1 innings, giving up 2 runs on 5 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 2. The Thunderbirds, now 2-10, continue their poor start.
Matt Bowers had a big 2-run double for the Sea Gulls in the bottom of the third inning. With Duluth leading 3-1 and runners on 1st and 2nd, he got a sinker from Val Imbert, who finished 2nd in the USA in saves with 22 in 2048, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 2nd double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Sea Gulls ahead, 5-1.
Goff called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
